How to change the file system of the disk or flash drive without formatting

Modern mobile devices, as a rule, can only work with flash drives and discs in FAT32 and are not compatible with the NTFS file system. At the same time, Windows on the contrary prefers exactly the last format on the media used with it (with the exception of loading flash drives). How to change the file system of the disk or flash drive without formatting

You can quickly change the file system from FAT or FAT32 to NTFS without media formatting and deleting files from it. This may be required, for example, to record a large file file (more than 4 GB). Recall that the FAT32 file system allows you to work with files whose size does not exceed 4 GB.

You can convert the file system using a special command in Windows. To do this, insert the media into the USB port of the computer and after its initialization in the system, look in the conductor letter, which is assigned to your flash drive or external HDD.

After that, run the command prompt by pressing Win + R and typing in the CMD query field. A command prompt window will open, in which you need to dial:

Convert J: / FS: NTFS

- Where J is the letter of your media disk (you may have another), on which the file system is converted.

And press ENTER. The conversion process will start.

How to change the file system of the disk or flash drive without formattingIt is worth noting that when converting a file system from FAT to NTFS, a new table of contents is created on the media (Master File Table - MFT) in another area of the disk. Therefore, the transformed volume has a slightly smaller speed than if the disk was immediately formatted in NTFS.

How to change the file system of the disk or flash drive without formattingIt would be convenient if you could also make an inverse conversion from NTFS in FAT32 without formatting. But alas, such a possibility of Windows does not provide. Perhaps this is due to the protection of user data: after all, the disk can contain a volume of more than 4 GB, and then the system cannot provide access to it.

By the way, if you have not yet purchased a universal USB flash drive, which can be connected to a computer and to a smartphone, including with a USB Type-C connector, then we recommend to look at the Silicon Power Mobile C50 32GB model with USB 3.0 interface.

How to change the file system of the flash drive or SSD disk from NTFS in FAT32 so that it can be connected to the smartphone? Embedded Windows tools for large-volume media does not succeed. Chip will tell, with what utility it can be done quickly and without problems in the next council.

Change the file system on the flash drive with FAT32 on NTFS

FAT32 and NTFS are the most common file systems on information media in Windows Family Operating Systems. In most cases, immediately when buying a flash drive is converted to FAT32 file system. But very often, for example, to record a file of more than 4 GB, it is required to change it to more modern - NTFS. How to do this you will learn in this article.

Change with full flash drive

There are two ways. The first - with the full deletion of all the contents and the second - with the preservation of all data on the flash drive.

Running forward immediately note that if possible, it is better to use exactly the first way that will be described below. Since during the conversion without deleting data, errors and even the complete arrival in the disrepair of the entire contents are possible.

Attention! This method will remove everything that is on the flash drive and according to the result it will be clean. Consider this and if you need to copy all the contents on the hard disk, and return it back after conversion.

  • Insert the USB flash drive in the USB port of the computer or laptop;

how to change the file system flash drive

We will analyze the question of how to change the file system of the CFAT32 flash drive on NTFS, but not losing important data on the carrier.

Most often, when buying a flash drive, we get it in the file standard system for external devices, it is in FAT32 format.

Why change the file system flash drive

When operating the device, it is quite often possible to change the file system of the flash drive to a more modern NTFS format.

You can call at least two significant reasons why there is a need for a flash drive system to change:

  1. The use of NTFS will undoubtedly affect the speed of the flash drive, since this format is more speed.
  2. The NTFS system will be needed to record a large file - more than 4 GB. The FAT32 system does not allow it to do.

Of course, the easiest way to copy the entire contents of the flash drive is a robust medium of information, and the flash drive itself format.

But there may be a situation where there are some important data on the flash drive and it is impossible to format it. To transfer these important data at the moment can be nowhere.

How to change file system flash drive tools

That is, the question is worth it - how to change the file system, but the important data on the carrier is kept.

Consider how it is to execute it in Windows 7 without using third-party programs using the built-in utility - convert.exe.

The utility has no graphical interface, so you have to use the command line.

Press Start , in the field row Find programs and files We write a team - cmd. . At the top of the window will appear this inscription cmd.exe. .

Select a command line

Right-hand mouse click on it and in context find - Run on the name of the administrator .

Running the command line

The command line is launched. Next operation is a call to the Convert function. And then you should specify a flash drive to which file system. The team will look as follows:

Convert (letter assigned to flash drive) / FS: NTFS

Here you need to specify the letter of the flash drive, under which it is defined on the computer.

To do this, open A computer And we see what the letter is fixed behind the connected flash drive. In this case, this is the letter H.

Letter flash drive

Therefore, in the command line, specify the letter H. Next, we put the colon, space, lay, FS, colon. Next, specify which file system you need to convert a flash drive, that is, in this case - NTFS. As a result, the team will be recorded like this:

Convert H: / FS: NTFS

Command to change file system flash drive

Zhmem. ENTER . There will be a proposal to set the Tom label, we do not put anything. Press again ENTER And the conversion process is launched.

We are waiting for a while. Conversion ends with a message that the conversion is completed.

As a result, the data on the flash drive is saved, and the file system is obtained on the flash drive to change.

Terms of successful conversion

In order for the conversion process to be successful, it is necessary to observe the environment:

  • Before converting a flash drive must be closed.
  • To change the successfully file system of the flash drive, you must have a certain free space on it. Therefore, if there is too much data on the flash drive, it may be necessary to remove something or moved to the hard disk.
  • Another point that is recommended to take into account the next one. Before the conversion process, not to lose some data, it is desirable to check the flash drive for errors.
  • In this case, the flash drive file system turns out to be changed without loss of data. But after all, if there are really important data on the flash drive, it is recommended to make a backup copy of important files and save them to a hard disk.

Check File System Flashki

Close the window open A computer , Check the files on the flash drive and make sure everything is in order. All our files remained intact without deletion.

Now check how the file system has changed. Open Properties The connected flash drive and observe that the media file system has changed on NTFS.

This procedure is irreversible. That is, the file system given by the command can be changed on the flash drive only in one direction.

To change the file system with NTFS format in FAT32, you have to format a flash drive.

Here is such a simple command makes it possible to change the file system with a regular Windows utility file without using third-party programs.

FAT32 file system, from which most flash drives are sold, has a number of restrictions that can create inconvenience to users. For example, the maximum file size that this file system supports is only 4 GB.

In order to solve this problem, the USB flash drive must be reformatted from the outdated FAT32 file system to more modern NTFS, in which there are no serious restrictions. And in this article we will look at three ways at once, as can be done.

Reformatting a flash drive from FAT32 to NTFS through the context menu

If you want to simply reformat from FAT32 and NTFS, then this can be done in two ways. The first method is formatting through the context menu of the flash drive. This method is the simplest and suitable for most users.

In order to reformat the USB flash drive in NTFS using this method, you need to open the My Computer window and right-click on the flash drive, then in the menu that opens, you need to select "Format".

Item format in context menu

As a result, a window appears to reformat the flash drive. In this window, you need to change the file system with FAT32 on NTFS. The remaining formatting settings can be left standard.

Selecting a file system in the formatting window

To start the process of reformatting a flash drive, you need to click on the "Start" button.

Launch formatting

After that, a window will appear with a warning that the reformatting of the flash drive in NTFS will delete all the data. To continue close this window using the OK button. Next will need to wait until formatting is over. Usually it goes no more than 1 minute. When formatting a flash drive is completed, the operating system will inform you about it.

Reformatting a flash drive from FAT32 to NTFS via CMD

Also reformatting from FAT32 and NTFS can be performed using the "command line". To do this, first click the Win + R key combination and execute the "CMD" command. So you will open the "Command Line".

After opening a "command line", you need to execute the command to reformat the flash drive. This command looks like this:

  • Format N: / FS: NTFS / Q / V: MyFlash

Where

  • N: - Letter, which is assigned to your flash drive;
  • / FS: NTFS - file system;
  • / Q - fast formatting;
  • / V: MyFlash - Tom Tag (Your flash drive name);

In the screenshot below, it is shown how this command looks in the "command line".

Format command on the command prompt

After executing this command, the system will ask you to press the ENTER key on the keyboard in order to confirm formatting.

Format execution command

After pressing the ENTER system will start the process of reformatting a flash drive from FAT32 and NTFS.

Reformatting a flash drive from FAT32 to NTFS without data loss

It is also possible to reformatting from FAT32 and NTFS without data loss. It is also done in the "command line", but already with the help of another team. To do this, use the following command:

Where:

  • N: - Letter, which is assigned to your flash drive;
  • / FS: NTFS - file system;

In the screenshot below, it is shown how this command looks in the "command line".

execution of the convert command

After executing the Convert command, the FAT32 file system conversion process is launched into the NTFS file system. In this case, all data on the flash drive is saved. The conversion process takes longer than the usual formatting so be prepared to wait a while.

"How to change the file system." I bring to your attention a learning article that will teach you to change the file system of the disk or flash drive.

First, why do you need?! During the application of various data storage devices, the need for replacement on the file system. Due to the fact that, for example, Fat32 does not support the volumes of 4 GB, for which it will have to be changed to another (NTFS). I will add another FAT32 very not stable file system . And with a sharp pulling off the flash drive, you can lose data from USB drive

In the window that opens, it is proposed to define the desired file system, formatting option, cluster (large or small size). Click "format" and the flash drive will be cleared of everything that it contained, and at the same time will get another FS. Minus, as you noticed, in what all information disappears.

Conversion

Less well-known way. Although, in contrast, from the previous one there is a plus - data on the carrier is saved. That is, after the conversion will pass Without data loss . Nevertheless, I recommend to leave copies of the necessary documents just in case. This process can be performed by resorting to the standard Windows utility. She does not have a graphical interface, functions in text mode. To change the system, one of the ways to open the command line are one way:

  • Press the combination Hot keys Win + R write cmd. In the "Run" window (Start menu)

Without starting converting, you should close the programs that use Files on a flash drive . Otherwise, the process is not executed, but it will be proposed forced to disable volume. I also advise you to check the disk for the presence of errors.

So, by closing the program, cutting off access to files, you need to enter a command to convert:

How to change the file system on the flash drive

Do you know that the type of file system affects the capabilities of your flash drive? So under FAT32, the maximum file size can be 4 GB, with larger files only the NTFS system works. And if the flash drive has EXT-2 format, it will not work in Windows. Therefore, some users have a question about changing the file system on the flash drive.

How to change the file system on the flash drive

This can be done by several fairly simple ways. Some of them are to use standard tools of the operating system, and to use others you need to download additional software. But everything is in order.

Method 1: HP USB Disk Storage Format

This utility is easy to use and helps in cases where the usual formatting of Windows does not work due to the wear of the flash drive.

Before using the utility, be sure to save the necessary information from the flash drive to another device. And then do this:

  1. Install the HP USB Disk Storage Format utility.
  2. Connect your drive to the computer's USB connector.
  3. Run the program.
  4. HP USB Disk Storage Format window

  5. In the main window in the field "Device" Check that your flash drive is displayed. Be careful, and if you are connected to several USB devices, do not make mistakes. Select in the field "FILE SYSTEM" The desired view of the file system: "NTFS" or "FAT / FAT32" .
  6. Put a tick near the row Quick Format For quick formatting.
  7. Press the button "Start" .

There are some features when working with this method. This is what:

  1. It is recommended to check the drive for errors before conversion. This is required to avoid errors. "SRC" When performing the utility.
  2. To convert, you need to have free space on the flash drive, otherwise the process will stop and message will appear. "... not enough space on the disk to convert the transformation faction F: It was not transformed into NTFS" .
  3. If there are applications that require registration on the flash drive, then most likely the registration will disappear. When converting from NTFS to FAT32 defragmentation will be time consuming.

Having understood in file systems, you can easily change them on the flash drive. And the problem when the user cannot download a movie in HD quality or an old device does not support the format of a modern USB carrier, will be solved. Good luck in job!

And what if it will be interesting:

Very often there are situations when you need from a hard disk to move or copy the large volume file to the external drive.

Sometimes for the flash drive you need to change the file system to load the desired large file file.

With a standard file system for external devices FAT32, file transmission from 2GB is often impossible. You can solve this problem in two ways:

  • Format a flash drive with changing the final file system.
  • Change the file system through the command line.

Changing the file system with device formatting

In the first case, you should transfer all the data from the flash drive to the hard disk to save them. This method is suitable for low-volume devices. To change the file system, make several operations:

Insert a USB device into the required port.

Open the "Computer" and the right mouse button to click on the external device to the "Format" tab.

You need to press the right mouse button on the disk.

By default, manufacturers are used in flash drives FAT32 file system. It is not the most perfect, has limitations on the size of the recorded file, but it is fully compatible with all modern operating systems. Our experts tell how to change the file system of the flash drive system to more comfortable.

Formatting

Formatting the easiest and most familiar option of changing the file system of the drive. You can perform it in the graphical interface of the operating system or using the command line.

Conductor menu

By connecting a flash drive to a PC, open the conductor. Click on the area with a graphical representation with the right mouse button, turning the context menu. Choose in it marked by a two-point item.

A window opens with disk formatting dialog. Click on the specified arrow string causing the menu of available file systems. By default, the user has the ability to choose between FAT32, EXFAT and NTFS. The exfat file system is optimized for FAT flash drives. Labor restrictions on the size of the recorded file, it also has a function of reducing wear of memory cells. By setting the type of FS with a selected frame button "Start".

Confirm the execution of the operation in the pop-up window, at the same time agreeing with the destruction of all available on the flash drive and unsaved data.

Having received a system notice, close it and can use the drive with the already modified file system.

The type of FS used can be found in the flash drive properties on the General tab. In the screenshot, the information line is highlighted by a green marker and is indicated by an arrow.

Command line

Call the advanced menu "Start" by the "Win + X" keys. Run the default command line shell installed. The described sequence of operations in the same way works in the classical CMD interpreter.

We recruit the "Format X: / FS: EXFAT / Q" in the invitation string. Instead of "x", specify the letter assigned to the flash drive by the system when connected. File system Select between FAT32, NTFS or EXFAT. The "/ Q" option allows quick formatting. The following screenshot shows an example of a command. The operation is performed for the drive with a LITERA "F", and EXFAT is selected as the destination system.

By pressing the ENTER key to start the command, the system will request to insert the disk into the "F" drive. I ignore this notice that remains from the old versions of Windows. Click the input key again.

In the region, the current and future file systems of the flash drive are displayed in the region. In the next step, the system will ask you to specify the volume label. We recruit it in the line specified by the "2" digit and press the ENTER again.

On the completion of the operation, the system reports the row of the specified arrow. Below it provides official information about the volume of free space, the number and size of clusters.

PowerShell

To use the PowerShell cmdlets to format the drive, launch the shell in elevated privileges mode.

GET-DISK in the invitation string. By pressing the input key in the console window displays a list of disks connected to a computer. At the next screen, the Kingstone flash drive is indicated by the arrow.

We enter a command that cleans the data from the connected USB drive: "Clear-Disk -Number 2 -Removedata". The number for the key "Number" take from the specified row arrow in the list of disks.

The execution of the requested operation requires an additional confirmation user. We enter in the Latin letter "Y" in the specified arrow. By pressing the input key, all data and partition table on the disk are erased.

Create a new partition table on the cleaned flash drive. We recruit the "New-Partition -Disknumber 2 -Usemaximumsize -isactive -DRiveletter F". In the "DiskNumber" key, we specify the sequence number of the disk used in the cleaning command - "2". The "Driveletter" option allows you to assign a letter to the letter with which it will be displayed in the conductor. Our experts have chosen "F", which is previously automatically assigned to Windows.

The disk initialization command will result in its re-definition by the system. A pop-up window will appear with the proposal to format in the OS graphical interface. Close it to continue working in PowerShell.
